It's been long coming, but I finally got my "Statement of Accomplishment" from Professor Ng at Stanford today. Many of us were waiting with baited breath; I was already sure of my score, but I was curious to see how the statement looked, and how it was scored...
First off, not much to say on the statement; more or less a "form letter" in a business format, which reads as follows:
Statement of Accomplishment
December 31, 2011
Dear Andrew L. Ayers (keeper63@cox.net),
Congratulations! You have successfully completed the online Machine Learning course (ml-class.org), offered October through December, 2011. To successfully complete this online course, students were required to watch lectures, complete review questions, and work through programming exercises. Your score on these components were as follows:
Review Questions: 80 out of a maximum of 80
Programming Exercises: 800 out of a maximum of 800
Sincerely,
Andrew Ng
I already knew my score was "perfect"; while I had scored a 98 on an earlier assignment in week 10, I had those "extra-credit" points from the beginning, which saved my bacon in the end. I was hoping for the "ultimate perfect" score, but I missed it by this >< much; oh well - I had fun trying!
Ultimately, though, for me it wasn't solely about the score or the statement. While having such acknowledgement is nice, it is so much better to know that I was able to enjoy, learn, and persevere through a class that presented new material and learning opportunities (including learning a new programming language!). At times it was grueling, but overall it was one of the most fun learning experiences I have had in recent years. It has allowed me to look at other problems in a new light; the skills I have learned I am certain will come in handy in the future, both for my hobbies as well as for my employer.
Thank you, Professor Andrew Ng, and Stanford, for offering all of us who participated in the class this opportunity. It has been both a pleasure and an honor.Questions or Comments?
